Arsenal Technical Passing & Receiving
Practice description
Aim
Improve receiving on the move, turning and passing forward with control.
How it works
Two players move into a central square together to receive from outside feeders. Each receiving action leads into a turn and a pass to the opposite side.
• On the coach's signal, both players enter the central square from opposite sides.
• Each player receives a pass from an outside feeder while moving into the space.
• Take a controlled first touch and turn away from the direction of pressure.
• Pass forward to a new player on the opposite side of the square.
• Repeat the receiving sequence, checking the next option early so the turn and pass flow together.

Coaching points
• Body Orientation – Players should arrive with an open body shape, ready to receive on the half-turn and transition quickly into the next pass.
• Scanning Before Receiving – Encourage players to scan their surroundings prior to receiving, allowing better decision-making and spatial awareness.
• First Touch Direction – The initial touch should take the player into space or towards their next action, rather than stopping the ball dead.
• Pass Execution – Focus on clean, accurate passes off both feet with appropriate weight and timing to maintain tempo and rhythm across the grid.

Progression 1
Passive Defender Inside Square
Add a passive defender in the square who applies light pressure, encouraging players to use feints, shielding, or quick turns to evade pressure before passing.
Focus:
Improves composure on the ball, close control in tight areas, and confidence turning away from light pressure realistically.

Progression 2
One-Touch Passing After Turn
Once players turn, challenge them to deliver their return pass with only one touch, demanding quicker processing and sharper body positioning.
Focus:
Develops sharper footwork, faster technical execution, and a greater awareness of space and timing under tighter constraints.
