Brugge 3rd Man Finishing
Practice description
Aim
Improve passing combinations, supporting movement and accurate finishing from a connected attacking sequence.
How it works
Four players combine in a diamond outside the penalty area before an unopposed finish. All four must participate, encouraging the group to link each pass with the next player's movement.
• Start the selected passing combination through the diamond.
• Use one-touch exchanges, wall passes or give-and-go movements within the sequence.
• Ensure all four players are involved before the final pass towards goal.
• The players move to maintain useful support angles as the ball travels.
• The final receiver completes the attack with a shot, matching the finish to the speed of the passing move.

Coaching points
• Quick Combinations: Focus on quick, one-touch passes to maintain the speed of play and break down the defensive line. Encourage players to keep the ball moving at a fast tempo to create space for the final shot.
• Movement Off the Ball: Emphasize the importance of players moving into space after making a pass. Players should be proactive, constantly looking for an opportunity to receive the ball or create a passing lane for their teammate.
• Finishing: Encourage players to focus on composure and accuracy when taking the shot. Players should vary their finishing techniques, such as placing the ball in the corners or using quick reactions for volleys and first-time shots.
• Timing of Runs: Timing is key in this drill. Players must time their runs into the box and receive the ball in stride, which will help them create better shooting angles and avoid being caught offside.

Progression 1
Add Pressure from a Defender:
Introduce a defender who starts at a distance and closes down the player receiving the ball for the final shot. This forces the attacker to take quicker decisions, improve their shooting under pressure, and execute a better finish.
Focus: Improves the attacking team’s ability to deal with defensive pressure and take shots with precision under time constraints.

Progression 2
Vary the Passing Combinations:
Change the passing combinations so that players are forced to use different techniques and engage in more dynamic movements. For example, include diagonal passes, through balls, or flicks to increase the complexity of the drill.
Focus: Develops versatility in attacking play, encouraging players to be creative and use different passing techniques to create goal-scoring opportunities.
