Practice description

Aim
Develop accurate third-player combinations and coordinated movement through a simple passing structure.

How it works
Players work through an unopposed triangular pattern, using supporting movement to connect each third-player action. Continual rotation creates fresh receiving angles while maintaining the passing rhythm.

• Begin the triangular passing sequence and identify the next receiving option.
• Use the linking player to connect the ball with the third teammate.
• Time the receiving movement so the pass can arrive without interrupting the sequence.
• Follow the action and rotate positions to provide the next supporting angle.
• Continue receiving, passing and moving, keeping the first touch ready for the next combination.

Coaching points

• Timing of the Third-Man Movement:
Emphasise supporting players moving at the correct moment to receive on the move without slowing ball circulation.

• Body Shape to Play Forward:
Encourage players to receive side-on with an open body shape to see multiple passing options early.

• Weight and Detail of Pass:
Reinforce crisp, accurate passes that allow the next action to be played smoothly at tempo.

• Movement After the Pass:
Coach players to follow their pass with intent, rotate positions quickly and maintain constant passing angles.

Progression 1

Coach Call to Change Direction:
On the coach’s shout or signal, players must immediately change the direction of the passing pattern and reorganise the third-man combination.

Focus:
Improves scanning, communication, adaptability and speed of decision-making when patterns are disrupted unexpectedly.
