Practice description

Aim
Develop forward passing, central combinations and third-man movements to create scoring opportunities.

How it works
Two teams play 3v3 centrally, with each team supported by three additional players on the end line they are attacking. Two mini goals are positioned at each end, with the supporting players stationed to the left, between the goals and to the right.

• The team in possession combines centrally and looks to progress towards either of its two target goals.
• Use the end-line players to receive forward passes and return the ball into the central area, creating opportunities to play around defenders.
• Encourage third-man combinations: one central player passes forwards to an end-line teammate, who sets the ball for a different central player arriving in space.
• On winning possession, the opposing team attacks the other end using its own three supporting players.
• Rotate players between central and end-line roles. With 13–14 players, rotate the additional players into the practice while maintaining the 3+3 vs 3+3 format.

Coaching points

• Scan Before Receiving – Check the position of defenders, teammates and the target goals before the ball arrives. Receive with an open body shape to recognise opportunities to play forwards.

• Create Clear Passing Lines – Central players should adjust their positions to offer different angles, while end-line players remain available beyond the defenders.

• Weight the Forward Pass – Play firmly and accurately into the supporting player, allowing them to return the ball cleanly without slowing the attack.

• Time Third-Man Movements – Move as the forward pass travels, arriving in space to receive the return ball. Avoid moving too early and allowing the defender to follow.

Progression 1

One-Touch End-Line Players

Limit the three end-line players on each team to one touch. Central players must provide immediate support for the return pass, while the end-line players scan and prepare their next action before receiving.

Focus: Improve passing quality, early scanning and the timing of supporting movements.

Progression 2

Reward Third-Man Combinations

Award two points when a central player passes to an end-line teammate, who sets the ball for a different central player to score within two touches. All other goals count as one point.

Focus: Encourage purposeful forward passes, well-timed third-man runs and composed finishing after a combination.
