Viking Positional Rondo

Practice description

Aim
Improve purposeful forward passing and pivot support within a positional structure.

How it works
A two-zone rondo uses a 4-2-3-1 shape without the striker. Two defenders work in each zone, and a central mannequin discourages square passes between the centre backs.

• The possession team circulates the ball through the two vertically connected zones.
• The centre backs look for forward or diagonal options around the mannequin rather than a direct square pass.
• One player from the deeper midfield pair can enter the active zone as a pivot.
• Use the pivot and supporting angles to connect play beyond pressure.
• The defenders close passing routes, while the possession players adjust their positions to keep useful options available.

Coaching points

• Positional Awareness: Players must hold realistic positions to reflect their roles in a real 4-2-3-1 shape. Encourage correct distances and angles.

• Avoiding Pressing Triggers: The mannequin acts as a visual cue to discourage predictable square passes—promote disguised passes or bounces instead.

• Pivot Player Timing: The supporting midfielder should time their movement into the zone to receive under minimal pressure and help connect lines.

• Scanning & Body Shape: Constant scanning is key. Players should receive side-on and prepare for their next action before the ball arrives.

• Tempo & Rhythm of Play: The ball should move quickly but under control. Sharp passing with minimal unnecessary touches maintains intensity and realism.

Progression 1

Live Press from Both Zones:

Allow one defender from the opposite zone to press after a set number of passes (e.g., 4), forcing quicker decisions and testing positional structure.

Focus: Increases pressing realism and encourages smart positioning to play through pressure.

Progression 2

Limit Pivot Touches:

Restrict the pivot player to two touches when entering the grid.

Focus: Enhances scanning, anticipation, and quicker release under pressure.
