Union Transfer Rondo

Practice description

Aim
Develop possession transfers through supporting players and quick finishing after regaining the ball.

How it works
Four pairs work across two neighbouring grids: two possession pairs, one outside linking pair and one defending pair. Winning the ball gives defenders a chance to score centrally. Place the two mini goals back-to-back in the central channel between the grids.

• The two possession pairs circulate the ball between their grids using the outside neutral pair.
• The defending pair moves across both grids to pressure the ball and seek a regain.
• Support each transfer so the receiving side has clear passing options.
• If defenders win possession, they immediately attack either central mini goal.
• After a successful goal, the defending pair swaps roles with the pair it dispossessed.

Coaching points

• Defensive Communication: The defending team must communicate effectively to press as a unit and cut off passing lanes between grids.

• Switching Tempo: Encourage quick switches across the grids to disorganize the defenders and find space on the opposite side.

• Neutral Link Play: The neutral team must stay active and provide passing angles at all times, enabling smooth transitions between grids.

• Ball Security: Teams in possession should focus on keeping the ball with minimal touches and clean, purposeful passes.

• Immediate Transition: If possession is lost or won, players should transition quickly—either to attack the goal or reorganize defensively.

Progression 1

Add a Touch Limit:

Limit players in possession to two touches per sequence. This increases the difficulty and forces quicker decisions and sharper technical execution.

Focus: Encourages faster play and sharper ball control while promoting quick decision-making under pressure.

Progression 2

Add a Time Limit to Score:

Once the defenders win possession, they must score within 5 seconds. This simulates a fast counterattack under real match conditions.

Focus: Improves speed of thought and execution during transition moments, helping players react instinctively in attacking situations.
